Everyone is excited about India’s upcoming tour of Australia which will start on 27th November 2020. India will play ODI, T-20 & a test series against Australia.
As we all know Rohit Sharma is not a part of a limited over series, Virat will return after Adelaide test ( first test of the series), Ishant Sharma’s fitness is also tentative so it is extremely important for India to start a series with a positive note.
Why Test Series against Australia is Important?
You might be wondering why we are creating so much hype for the series? why we aren’t taking this as any other test series? The simple answer is – World Test Championship.
In case India loses this series against Australia it will be extremely difficult for them to qualify for the final of World Test Championship which is to be played on Lords.
You might be thinking India is at the top in World Test Championship (2019-2021) points table then how this is possible?
The test series against New Zealand has badly hurt India where they lost all the 120 points. World Test Championship features nine of the twelve Test-playing nations, each of whom will play a Test series against six of the other eight teams (three at home and three away).
India has 2 series remaining in World Test Championship – one against Australia (4 matches) & the other against England (5 matches). They already have 360 points under their belt but still, the journey isn’t easy. Because they have a series against Australia & England.
On the other hand New Zealand have 3 series remaining which is against Pakistan ,West indies & Bangladesh. Here, New Zealand is clear hot favorite as Pakistan and West Indies are home series for them.
Permutations and combinations of India’s Chances to play World Test Championship Final
If India won the series by 4-0 (very very unlikely), 3-0 (unlikely too), 3-1 (extremely difficult) or even 2-1 (for that also India have to play out of the skin as they will be without Kohli after 1st test) they will be nearly through because all these probabilities will give them at least 70 points ( 2 wins & a draw) so their total will be 430 after the end of the series.
If India finishes up with 2-2, they will have 60 points which will make their tally to 420. Again this could be an optimal result for them as they only have to manage a few wins against England.
If India loses by 4-0, 3-0 then they will have 360 or 370 points and they have to clean sweep against England (5-0) on that case they will have 480 or 490 points, which may not be enough as Australia will have 416 points ( 296 +120) with 2 series left and New Zealand already has 292 points with 3 series remaining in which they are hot favourites. So they can make up to 472 points ( 292 +180).
If India loses by 3-1, 2-1, in that case, India will finish up with 390 or 400 points. Again they have to beat England by 4-1 or 3-1 to score around 480 points.
So, after analyzing all these calculations we can imagine how crucial the test series against Australia is.
Distribution of points in ICC World Test Championship
Each series will carry 120 Points doesn’t matter whether it is 2, 3, 4 or 5 match series. Each series will carry equal points. For instance, if there are 4 matches in a series then each match will carry 30 points. Similarly, in 5 matches series, each match will carry 24 points.
If match gets draw then 1/3rd of the points will get rewarded. Don’t worry, the rule is simple lets say you are playing 2 match series (60 points for each match) then in case of draw both teams will be rewarded 1/3rd of the points that is 20 points.
Similarly, in case of tie (score gets equal) equal points will be distributed based on the series. As we can’t have super over in test matches 😀
Did Rohit and Kohli make the Right choice?
We all respect personal decisions but considering the importance of the series, Kohli could have played the entire series? Like Dhoni played World cup without seeing his daughter. Well no offence but if you are on National duty anything else can wait.
Virat absence as a batsman, as a captain & as a sledge giver will be definitely missed.
Rohit did even the more worse thing. Even though he was unfit he played last 3 matches for MI (Mumbai Indians) ultimately Mumbai Indians become champions as well due to Rohit’s brilliant captaincy & team work. But giving priority to franchise over nation was that a right move? Surely not in my perspective.
Kohli and Rohit both are our top players and one of the best in modern era cricket but due to their personal choices questions may arise as well.
Even without Virat & Rohit India is a better team now. Obviously, they are our biggest match-winners but still, we got other quality players as well who knows how to give it back. That is why Glean McGrath hasn’t given his prediction this time 😀
Hope, Ishant & Rohit recovers soon & will get some match practice before the series.
Looking forward to a fantastic, nail-biting & quality cricket series ahead. Cheers!
