Ben Stokes? Haha, that’s not what I said or Virat Kohli says on a cricket field . Here we are talking about kiwi born Englishman, probably the best all-rounder of modern-day cricket – Benjamin Andrew Stokes.
History of Ben Stokes Family – The Sun
The Sun revealed a sad story of Ben Stokes family. According to The Sun, Ben Stokes had half-brother (Andrew- 4) & sister (Tracey- 8) who were murdered by her mother’s ex-husband Richard Dunn in Christchurch, New Zealand. After shooting both the kids his ex-father shoot himself as well. Ben Stokes wasn’t even born at that time.
The reason behind Shooting own children
According to The Sun, Dunn (Stoke’s mom ex-husband) was jealous when he got to know that Deb (Stokes mother) has started her new relationship with Gerard Stokes ( Ben Stokes father). Well, we all should always be honest in every aspect of life whether it’s a relationship or any other thing.
So you can imagine how terrible & sad was the time when Ben Stokes was born. Ben Stoke’s birth gave new hope to his mother Deb. Even though she was found guilty of having an extramarital affair but anger isn’t the solution to deal with any situation.
Still, after suffering from so much tough time Ben Stoke’s mother would be very proud of what Ben Stokes has achieved in international cricket. Even Ben Stokes father Gerard Stoke’s was a national rugby player & coach of New Zealand rugby team.
“Sometimes people with the worst past end up creating the best future“.
Later Ben Stokes lashes out at The Sun for revealing his personal story in a very negative way which was rightly so. Stokes expressed his anger by saying it was immoral & heartless.
Stokesy we can feel you buddy. You are a real gem & diamond of England cricket.
Ben Stokes arrival in International Cricket
Ben Stokes made his debut for England against Ireland in August 2011. Since then he was in & out from the team because of injuries, form & lack of discipline. Again he came in picture in 2012-13 Ashes but unfortunately he hasn’t got a chance in World T-20, 2014 & 2015 World Cup.
World T-20, 2016
After so much struggle, tolerance & efforts finally Ben Stokes got a chance to represent England in ICC tournament like World T-20, 2016. There also Ben stokes stats were not up to the mark, he finished with just 56 runs with the bat & 4 wickets (including 3 vs New Zealand in the semi-final) with the ball.
Was Ben Stokes Culprit behind England Loss?
Remember the name, Carlos Brathwaite. Who can forget that commentary of Ian Bishop, when Carlos Brathwaite smashed 4 consecutive sixes in final over of Ben Stokes in World T-20 final 2016. West-Indies needed 19 runs in the final over. England was looking clear favourites then suddenly West-Indies snatched victory from England, thanks to the big man Carlos Brathwaite.
Does one good game or a bad game make or breaks a player? Well, Ben Stokes used to think so. He was in pain after conceding those mighty 4 sixes. He nearly broke down, the pain was real, the emotions were popping out.
Sometimes Cricket is so unfair. But one good knock or one bad performance won’t make you a hero or culprit remember that. Yuvraj Singh is a prime example of this as he was in a similar situation after playing a knock of 11 runs of 21 balls in 2014 World T-20 final. But people still remember him for all his achievement throughout his career.
Just think for a minute, after that 4 sixes, where is Carlos Brathwaite & Ben Stokes now.
“Bad things happen to you only to make you grow”.
World Cup 2019
Here comes the biggest event of cricket, the World Cup. Fans from the past 4 years were waiting just to see their nations compete against each other in the biggest ICC event. After so much ups & downs England finally managed to reach in the World Cup final again.
When Life gives you second chance utilize it like a Ben Stokes
The phrase perfectly matches him, isn’t it? He became a villain 3 years ago, now life again gave him a chance to turn the table. But this time Ben Stokes was ready. He grabbed this opportunity of writing his name in history with both hands. With his sponsored GM Diamond cricket bat he played a match-winning knock of 92 ( including super over).
Ben Stokes Advice to Jofra Archer before Super-Over
Ben Stokes used all of his experience & said Jofra Archer – “Everyone believes in you, win or lose today, doesn’t define you“. Well, that was a pure Gold of words Bens Stokes gave to the young speedster Jofra Archer before he was bowling the biggest 6 deliveries of his life. After all, he had all of his bad experience this time which made him wiser to deal with the pressure situation.
Ben Stokes stats in World Cup 2019 were remarkable. I guess that was the biggest positive, one of the main reason behind England’s maiden 50 over World Cup. Take a bow, Ben Stokes.
Legacy of All-rounders
England Cricket has a legacy of producing quality all-rounders like WG Grace, Ian Botham, Andrew Flintoff but no other allrounder was able to do for England what Ben Stokes did. England Cricket finally got a much-awaited all-rounder since Flintoff in the form of Ben Stokes.
A magical Knock in The Ashes
Remember that knock in the second test of The Ashes where Ben Stokes single-handedly destroyed Australian bowling line up.
England was already 1-0 behind the series then he came from nowhere & destroyed the likes of Starc, Cummins & Hazlewood. England were 9 down, Australia needed just 1 wicket to win the test & retain the Ashes but Ben Stokes destroyed all of their hopes.
Eventually, Australia went on to retain the Ashes after winning 3rd test of the series but Ben Stoke’s knock in the series was memorable much like Kusal Parera played against South Africa in the same year 2019.
Ben Stokes 258 against South-Africa, World-Cup winning knock, knock against Australia in the Ashes are few highlights of what Ben Stokes has achieved in his career. After conceding those 4 sixes who would have thought Ben Stokes will become the next big thing in World Cricket.
Experts feel he will be remembered as the greatest all-rounder in cricket history along with Jacques Kallis.
Hope you all enjoyed & more importantly learnt a new thing from this article. Don’t forget to share, let me know if you feel any other all-rounder can compete with Ben Stokes or can register their name in the elite list of all-rounders in the modern era.
